I was brought up in a house filled with music which must have rubbed off on me. I can remember whilst growing up, the radio being on every morning. This was the beginning of my love of music, and in my teenage years, my taste was a musical eyeopener.
I love all types of music from Punk to Funk, including classical music. My teenage years consisted of the tail end of punk (1977) and the beginning of my love for soul and disco music.
Soul Music had actually been instilled in me by my late fathers love of The Stylistics. I can remember playing music that I had recorded from my bedroom at the age of 13, practicing to be a DJ using a reel to reel, a microphone and a long wire with a speaker to my parents front room.
At the age of 18 I bought some equipment with some friends and became a mobile DJ. This was the start of my road trip as a DJ. This progressed into clubs and ended up with me being offered a position on Soul Groove Radio in 2009, and in 2018 I became a co-owner of the station.
My Shows are on a Friday night from 8.00 – 10.00pm ‘Funkin’ Towards The Weekend’ where I play a mixed bag from the 60’s to date. Sunday Mornings – ‘Soulful Sunday Breakfast’ – 9.00 – 10.00am where I usually play more mellowed tracks / Jazz Funk / classic tracks with the occasional new track thrown in for good measures.
Soul Groove Radio was created out of a passion that I have for Soul music and what a better way to indulge my passion than create our wonderful station that has grown from strength to strength over the past 11 years.
I have been collecting music ever since I was 15 years old and have built up a vast collection over the years and I still enjoy discovering new music that I get to play on my weekly shows
I present my own weekly shows called “The Soul Experience” were I dig through the Soul Groove Radio vaults to bring you some of the best music on the plant
I hope you enjoy listening to Soul Groove Radio and welcome to The Soul Groove Radio Family .
After 40 years of DJing at pubs, clubs and parties around the Hertfordshire area I retired from main stream DJing . Four years ago I concentrated on my passion of jazz funk and soul music with a successful monthly soul night (Soulful Delites @ Bull Rodizio) with a host of guest DJs from the soul scene. In January 2019 I was approached by Soul Groove Radio and in March 2019 I joined their expanding team of presenters to play some of the best music to listeners around the world with 2 shows a week, ‘Soulful Sandwich on Tuesday evenings and Live@5 on Fridays’.
My love for soul music started at the age of sweet 16 when I worked up in London and most Saturday nights we would all go to Samantha’s night club off Regents Street. I then started going to the Goldmine in Canvey, Lacey Lady in Seven Kings, Zero 6 in Southend and the Norfolk Village in
I enjoy twice yearly trip to Caister Soul Weekenders from 1988 to 2012. I also went to other weekenders in Poole, Bournemouth and the big Blackpool international soul weekend.
I joined Soul Groove Radio team in February 2020 as admin and really enjoy promoting and advertising the station, shows, DJ’s and merchandise. My involvement in SGR’s 1st all dayer was a great experience and I can not wait to get involved with more events and who knows maybe a weekender in the future.
Ray’s introduction to music was ‘Uncle Mac’s children’s hour’ on his mum and dad’s wireless in the 1950’s. So much so that for some reason, at the age of 9, when home from school sick one day, he started playing the drums. His musical influences have been 50’s Rock ‘n’ Roll, and 60’s Soul. When his first band folded in 1969 he started his own mobile disco, ‘The Hole in the Wall’. Fast forward to 1975, he was lucky enough to bag the job of travelling around the world as an international DJ for the Hilton group, EMI and the Forte group until 1984 when he stepped out of the disco scene.
He founded and run his own successful brewery in Gloucestershire for 25 years and is a qualified Microbiologist.
Now retired and when he isn’t broadcasting on Soul Groove Radio, he keeps himself busy, delivering Jaguars, Range Rovers and Land Rovers around the country.
I am one of the new DJs which have joined the great radio station Soul Groove Radio. I’m a mobile DJ, and have been, off and on for over 22 years, I started DJ-ing at age of 15 and yes… I used to carry all those boxes of vinyl around.
Just before the lock down, a good friend of mine told me that Soul Groove Radio were looking for DJs, I applied and to my surprise they asked me to join – wow!
I have every Sunday Morning show from 10.00 am until 12 noon, which is called a Whole Lot of Soul. In this show I do asked the listeners to take part in my ‘Two from One’, where you can have two tracks from any soul band or artist.
Radio DJ-ing, is so much fun for me, reacting with the listeners, with the funny comments and great banter. Joining Soul Groove Radio is like having a great big soul family, plus having all the management and DJs giving their support during my shows.
A big thanks for listening…
I started DJing at the young age of 16, way back in 1978 just after leaving school… a family friend was the DJ at the Café Royal on Regents Street in Central London doing a monthly gig, I went along one evening and I was instantly hooked, and I have never looked back since, I bought my first FAL turntable & played my first 7” single of Earth Wind & Fires – September playing at family & friends parties & then bought a Citronic Thames 2 turntable, When I felt more confident entertaining larger crowds I treated myself to a pair of Vestax PDT 5000 Turntables & the music collection started to grow, I still enjoy spinning the tunes as much today as I did when I started all those years ago.
I’ve been a VDJ for about 15 years years now and about the same time started working at Planet Hollywood in Leicester Square and the new venue on the Haymarket in Central London, Also had a nine year residency at Dover Street Jazz Wine Bar in Mayfair, working with some great Soul, Funk & Jazz Funk tribute bands and played alongside 80’s Soul Diva Jackie Graham.
Also worked in many venues in & around London, also worked on a few Cruise Ships sailing up & down the Adriatic ocean and around the med.
I’m new to Soul Groove Radio and hope you enjoy my shows, I’ll be playing a mix bag of the very best soulful tracks I can get my hands.
I started my DJ career when I was 14 in 1973 with my best mate Paul Wright, making our own sound system with a 12 valve amp and homemade twin Garrard SP25 Mk 2 Turntables with mixer faders.
Throughout my childhood and teens I collected on vinyl most of the Motown hits. My interest and collection included the likes of The Chi-Lites, Four Tops, Marvin Gaye, The Isley Brothers, Gladys Knight & The Pips, Boyz II Men and many more, my favourite band was and still are the Stylistics.
For three years I was the resident DJ and Sports News presenter (in house TV) at St Marys University, Twickenham (1977 – 1980) with my bestman Pete Dando, when I got married in 1983.
My DJ career took me all around the London Boroughs gigging at all types venues for different occasions. Right up to 2000 I was out and about being a DJ and had to retire due to and arm operation.
I rejuvenated my DJ career when I started a new job in 2012 which allowed me to use large sound recording equipment and lighting system up to present date, I am the resident DJ at my workplace.
I joined Soul Groove Radio as a Radio Presenter and website designer in August 2020
I look forward to presenting a wide range of SGR genres of music to all our listeners every week on my ‘Saturday Soul Groove Show’ at 10am to 12 Noon.

Music has been a passion of mine for many years and it is great to be able to share this with like minded people. For me it’s all about the feeling when the beat or vocal drops, the saying is true “one good thing about music, when it hits you, you feel no pain”
Since a young boy soul music has always been a massive part of my life, while my friends were buying football stickers I was spending my pocket money at the market stall buying records. I would like to thank my dad for passing on his passion and love for jazz funk, soul, disco and boogie, first hearing The Riff of “Rock creek park” (Blackbyrds) and the bass line of “Bus Stop” (Fatback) I have never looked back or forgotten that.
A few of my favourite artists which you will hear in my shows include the voice of silk Luther Vandross, The Chi-Lites and not forgetting Donny Hathaway.
The Check out the Groove show is all about the Soul Family Coming Together and enjoying the music we love .
Enjoy The Shows
Bless the Funk

Steve Jones from Chester, comes from a past background of playing predominantly soul music in night clubs and bars, and has also worked the mobile DJ circuit for many years and also various pirate radio stations in the past in the north west of England.
I’m passionate about soul music and on my show every Sunday on Soul Groove Radio I will try my utmost to make sure you hear only the best in soul music from the past to present.
My love of soul music goes way back into my early childhood…listening to my mum playing Gladys Knight, The Drifters, Isaac Hayes, The Stylistics, Johnny Mathis on the lounge stereo. The crackle of the needle on the rotating vinyl disc and then there was magic!
Like so many people those early childhood sounds are still the ones that I love so much now. Into the eighties and my teenage years. So much fabulous music that completely cemented my love of Soul as a genre. When school friends were firmly into the New Romantics, I was a Luther and Freddie Jackson girl!
The inspiration for the Love Lounge’s monthly show, It’s Time for Love, started with a conversation about 80s soul nights and the wonderful slow tracks that you’d hear once all the serious dancing had been done. You know the ones…the boy comes over and asks the girl for a slow dance (or if super brave the girl might ask the boy!) The songs that love was made, relationships were born, hearts were broken and memories made. Whatever the occasion we all have our own songs, special to us.
So followed the idea, two hours of radio packed full of love songs and mellow sounds (new and old). Not much DJ chat, just an opportunity to lose oneself in fantastic music and meaningful lyrics that do all of the talking that’s needed anyway.

Why do I love soul music easy my Mum and Dad there was always Ella Fitzgerald, Sarah Vaughan, Billy Eckstine (Passing Strangers still the best thing ever) ,The Platters and Qunicy Jones being played in the house.
I started DJing at 16 and was taught by a great DJ called Mick Loades.I worked on weddings, work socials all the usual places. After a few years I said I really wanted to do a soul night this would have been about 1972. I can still hear him say who wants to listen to that music all night. I started doing the odd nights around Hertfordshire then someone offered me a Wednesday night at a place in Stevenage called The Pyramid after a couple of weeks we were doing Monday and Friday for about 2 or 3 years selling out on both nights. Saturday nights I would guest at local venues. In the mid eighties I fell out of love with it all and stopped. Then about 10 years ago a friend kept onto me to come and do a spot and here we are today. Still mad about soul, Jazz,Funk and Soulful house music spend far too much time looking for new and old tunes I have never heard.
I have been DJ’ing on & off since I was 17.
Got back into it again properly about 18 years ago working as a mobile
DJ, weddings, parties etc.
Worked at a few bars & pubs including The Horns in Watford for 6 years.
Worked with IMIN Radio, a black urban music station for a year.
Started up Soulful Heaven in Jan 2016 – a once a month Soul night, in Watford.
Hoping to restart after the pandemic is over.
Joined Soul Groove Radio in June 2020 and loving it.

He then got involved in Djaying & putting on Soul events in his home town of Oldham and surrounding areas playing a mixture of Soul, Jazz- Funk, RnB and Hip-Hip. In the early 90’s Tesh joined the legendary Soul Nation 104.6fm where he cut his teeth as a radio DJ. Tesh also DJ’d on Sunset Radio in Manchester and on Fresh FM in Leicester whilst studying there. Tesh took an ‘involuntary sabbatical’ from DJ’ing as family life and jobs took priority. Now based down south, Tesh is a norther at heart and his musical foundation is built on the sound system culture and ‘blues parties’ of Manchester, and the Street Soul scene and cites The Soul Control Sound System as a major influence in his musical journey. Tesh got back playing on a regular basis at events with the Soul Fever collective from Watford. Tesh joined Soul Groove Radio in mid 2020 and hosts ‘Taking Care of Business’ on a Saturday night & Saturday playing Neo / Independent Soul and Old School classics.
Listening to and playing music has always been a large part of my life.
I bought my first vinyl in 1974 aged 7, by 1983 I was immersed in the UK scooter scene and began attending the rallies which boasted ex-Wigan Casino DJs on their all-nighter line-up.
There was so much music that I hadn’t heard before and of course, as there was a record bar in each venue, my record collection increased although never as much as my wants list.
I really get a kick out of sharing my passion for music and have enjoyed playing my 70s soul, funk and disco records to the world ever since.
