Our History

Soul Groove Radio was founded in 2009 by Lee Lessells as a hobby to fill his time while bringing up his son as a single parent.

The station originally played Soul, Funk & Disco from the 1970’s & 1980’s.

Over the next 8 years Soul Groove Radio was simmering in the background.

By Summer 2018 the station had a dedicated following but still was finding it hard to recruit presenters.

When funding to keep the station running had started to strain Lee’s bank balance, long standing presenter Ray Douglass stepped into fund the station and became co-owner.

Ray took control of the stations direction, which included introducing terms and conditions for the presenters, whilst Lee continued to concentrate on the day to day running of the station which includes the scheduling of shows.

Ray introduced the new music policies together with the much needed merchandising & marketing that was needed to update and help make the station what it is today.

Gary Makepeace was invited to join the management team in late 2019 to help with the merchandising, marketing & assist with recruitment of presenters.

In early 2020 Hazel Dunmow came on board to assist with some of the administration of the Facebook and Instagram pages.

Soul Groove Radio registered with companies house to become a limited company and that was all finalised at the end of March 2021.
